Katelyn Sima is the 2026 recipient of the Inez Demonet Scholarship, awarded by the Vesalius Trust for Visual Communication in the Health Sciences. Katelyn graduated magna cum laude from Iowa State University with a Bachelor of Art degree in Biological Pre-medical Illustration.  Her interest in cataloging the natural world started early, back when drawing dinosaur bones in kindergarten felt like cutting-edge science.

Since then, Katelyn has expanded her topics of interest. From depicting cellular processes to reconstructing neuroanatomy, Katelyn’s favorite projects have been guided by a careful balance of research, visual metaphors, and dynamic storytelling.  Her thesis project, ‘Bullet Points: Visual Guide for Radiology and Penetration Trauma,’ presents an upcoming opportunity to explore the impact of interactivity and 3D models on teaching the basics of penetration trauma to radiology residents.

The Inez Demonet Scholarship is an annual merit scholarship awarded to the applicant with highest academic and personal achievements in the field of visual communications in the health sciences. Any second year student enrolled in an accredited graduate program is eligible to apply. The Demonet award was the first scholarship established by the Vesalius Trust. This scholarship honors a well-known, respected medical illustrator who was a charter member of the Association of Medical Illustrators.

Congratulations, Katelyn!
