A picture is worth a thousand words. But what if you can’t see it? In this talk, we will discuss scripting for science media to help more people access it – from those with low vision, to those listening to videos while doing other tasks, to those intensely studying your science topic. We will reference work from our team’s 2021 Digital Education and Learning Technology Acceleration (DELTA) grant project at Johns Hopkins University. Our multidisciplinary team included departments of Medical Illustration, the Disability Health Research Center, and the School of Education. We’ll share preliminary results from our audio description survey study as well as insights and practical tips for the science communicator. Ultimately, we strive for Universal Design – creating pieces that better help learners of all abilities and situations to become expert learners.
