Corinne Sandone, MA, CMI, FAMI
Professor Cory Sandone is the Director of the Department of Art as Applied to Medicine. She teaches coursework in surgical illustration, operating room sketching, portfolio preparation and professional development and she advises graduate student research.
Her own work is primarily surgical illustration; she has used watercolor and digital media to create several large, color surgical atlases. She is the co-author of the Cameron-Sandone Atlas of Gastrointestinal Surgery.
Cory received her B.A. in Studio Art from Oberlin College in 1982. She did graduate study at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, receiving her M.A. in Medical and Biological Illustration in 1986. Cory has been a professional member of the Association of Medical Illustrators (AMI) for over 30 years, has served on the AMI Board of Governors and as the President of the AMI in 2014-2015. She is a board-certified medical illustrator (CMI).
As department director, she oversees the achievements and academic promotion of eight outstanding fulltime faculty members; ensures the educational growth of sixteen talented graduate students in our two interdisciplinary graduate programs; and supports our specialized staff.
Cory enjoys developing curriculum to reflect relevant topics in our profession and has lectured on a variety of subjects including the related histories of dissection and anatomical illustration, improving health literacy through visuals, illustrating minimally invasive surgery, and outreach for the field. In her own work, she combines traditional media with digital tools and strives to retain a handcrafted look and feel to her images. She is a voracious reader and is proud to be a resident of Baltimore City.
