The Department of Art as Applied to Medicine is honored to remember the life and achievements of outstanding alumnus and distinguished faculty Neil O. Hardy (1929-2018).
Neil began his career in medical illustration when he entered the Johns Hopkins Medical and Biological Illustration program in 1955. At the time, the program awarded certificates, and Neil graduated three years later with his well-deserved Certificate in Medical and Biological Illustration in 1958.
A pioneer in molecular illustration, Neil illustrated Christian De Duve’s A Guided Tour of the Living Cell, Volume 1 and 2, first published in 1984.
Named to the Johns Hopkins faculty in 1983, Neil was the ideal person to teach Business Policy for the Medical Illustrator which included molecular illustration in a mock client setting. He continued teaching this course for 20 years, stepping down as an Associate Professor in 2003.
Recipient in 1991 of the Ranice W. Crosby Distinguished Achievement Award, Neil exemplified a life dedicated to the field of Medical Illustration.
With gratitude and fond remembrance, your colleagues cherish your legacy.
