Introduction to operating room protocol, observation and recording of surgical procedures.

Course Description

Objectives

  • Make accurate, reliable sketches from direct observation in the operating rooms
  • Discuss observations and sketches with faculty using appropriate surgical terms
  • Identify and sketch surgical techniques: retraction, dissection, clamping, grasping, and division of structures, suture patterns, instrumentation
  • Understand aseptic area and policy in the operating room

Assignments

Students will further develop their skills through class lectures/demonstrations, tutorials and exercises, including:

  1. OR protocol and etiquette
  2. Observing procedures
  3. Sketching tissue reaction, instrumentation, equipment, surgical moments
  4. Laparoscopic and robotic surgery techniques
  5. Suturing practicum
