Li Yao is the 2017 recipient of the Inez Demonet Scholarship, awarded by the Vesalius Trust for Visual Communication in the Health Sciences. Li matriculated into the Master of Arts program at Johns Hopkins following graduate level training in molecular biology and genetics at Cornell University where she studied nuclear architecture and regulation of transcription. As an undergraduate student at Zhejiang University in China, Li had an impressive academic and research background, earning numerous awards and scholarships. Li’s master’s thesis at Johns Hopkins was titled Lymphatic Voyage: communicating 4D immune cell dynamics and lymph node architecture using WebGL-based animation and interactivity .

The Inez Demonet Scholarship is an annual merit scholarship awarded to the applicant with highest academic and personal achievements in the field of visual communications in the health sciences. Any second year student enrolled in an accredited graduate program is eligible to apply. The Demonet award was the first scholarship established by the Vesalius Trust. This scholarship honors a well-known, respected medical illustrator who was a charter member of the Association of Medical Illustrators.
