On July 18, 2025 Anne R. Altemus, MA (’90), FAMI, received the Association of Medical Illustrators’ Lifetime Achievement Award. The AMI’s highest honor, this award recognizes a member whose life’s work has had a profound and lasting impact on the profession of medical illustration. Anne’s extraordinary 35-year career exemplifies achievement through her dedication to visual science communication, education, and leadership.
A Fellow of the AMI, Anne served as President of the AMI (2002–2003) and Chair of the Board of Governors (1998-1999). Anne’s service spans nearly every major AMI committee.
Anne is known for her long and impactful tenure at the National Library of Medicine (NLM), where she served as Senior Visual Information Specialist and Acting Chief of the Audiovisual Program Development Branch. Anne led multidisciplinary teams creating award-winning media and public health resources for broad and diverse audiences. Her commitment to the development of young professionals has been exceptional, demonstrated by her role as internship and fellowship sponsor, coordinator, and mentor for more than 50 interns (graduate, undergraduate, and high school students) at the NLM.
Anne’s role as a part time faculty member in our department, since 1991, further reflects her enduring commitment to education. Anne has taught and mentored generations of students, while advancing the use of technology in visual instruction.
Anne’s career reflects thoughtful leadership, artistic excellence, and a deep commitment to mentorship.
