Illustrating Anatomy

This course introduces methods for planning and creating complex color anatomical illustrations with a focus on incorporating radiological imaging into medical illustration workflows.

Course Description

Objectives

  • Work with a content expert to create an anatomical illustration
  • Create cadaver sketches from direct observation
  • Study autopsy resources
  • Gain an understanding of technical information including:
     a. methods for creating digital color illustrations
     b. file organization
     c. color theory for the medical illustrator
     d. radiological visualization for the medical illustrator
  • Gain an understanding of conceptual information including:
     a. visual simplification of detailed anatomical information
     b. applications of learning theory in medical illustration
     c. fundamentals of didactic information hierarchy, layout, and labeling

Resources

  1. Autopsy visit
  2. Cadaver dissections
  3. Print and digital reference books
  4. Online data resources
  5. Macintosh computer hardware, stylus-based input devices, and printers
  6. Software and plugins with associated tutorials

Assignments

Students will further develop their skills through class lectures/demonstrations, tutorials and class exercises, including:

  1. Anatomical Illustration
  2. Radiological Visualization Exercises
  3. Tissue Studies
  4. Cadaver Sketching

Student Evaluations

  • 1:1 faculty-student interactions
  • Successful completion of above-mentioned assignments
