Illustration of surgical procedures from operating room sketches for medical education. The illustrations can be prepared for publication, presentation, patient education, advertising, or use on the web or in the court room.

Course Description

Objectives

  • Describe common surgical procedures with related anatomical structures.
  • Develop sketches of operative steps and supporting conceptual images.
  • Develop concise “word story” to accompany images.
  • Discuss observations and sketches with surgeon and departmental faculty.
  • Arrange layout of images in appropriate formats for publication, projection, online.
  • Complete final illustrations of step/s of the procedure in line, tone, or color.
  • Produce effective surgical illustrations to meet a deadline.
  • Record production time to determine a pricing estimate.
  • Develop an individual identifiable style.

Schedule

August – November, refer to Departmental Calendar for 2nd year students.

Assignments

Students will further develop their skills through class lectures/demonstrations, tutorials and class exercises, and 1:1 faculty advising.

  1. Two surgical procedures selected from the following areas
    • Thoracic, including cardiac
    • Abdominal, including kidney
    • Reconstructive/Plastic
    • Orthopedic
    • Otolaryngology – Head and Neck
    • OB-Gyn
    • Urologic
    • Neurosurgery
  2. One assignment developed for journal format; one for slide projection.
  3. One final rendering will contain multiple images.
  4. One assignment should be a laparoscopic, robotic or VATS procedure.
  5. One assignment reinterpreted for a lay audience, delivered within short deadline.
