Instructor or Assistant Professor
The Department of Art as Applied to Medicine at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine seeks an academic Medical Illustrator for appointment as an Instructor or Assistant Professor.
We are seeking an outstanding medical illustrator to join our faculty, teach in our esteemed graduate program, and provide expert visual communication services through the Department of Art as Applied to Medicine. Excellent opportunities exist for an energetic illustrator including access to state of the art clinical and surgical facilities, research environments, and collaboration with faculty of the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions.
Please note: this position is not remote and is for full-time employment on the Johns Hopkins Medical Campus.
Required Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Medical Illustration
- Certified Medical Illustrator (CMI) by the date of appointment or shortly after
- Experience in:
- The design and creation of educational material for medicine and science
- 2D illustration for print, presentations, and other digital formats
- Developing 2D and 3D animations
- 3D modeling and sculpting (C4D and ZBrush preferred)
The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent drawing skills, a strong sense of design, an ability to visualize spatial relationships, a thorough understanding of human anatomy, concepts in cellular and molecular biology and surgical technique. Superb collaboration and communication skills, verbal and written, are expected including the ability to critique student work with clarity and sensitivity. Ability to teach complex field-specific concepts and digital skills at the graduate level is required; experience with interactive applications and coding experience is a plus. A willingness to explore and adapt to new methods, materials, and technologies is essential. Experience managing multiple projects and successful balance of priorities is required. Candidates must be willing to generously share their skills and knowledge to prepare students for a successful career in Medical Illustration and value the critical role the graduate programs play in the future health of our profession.
