Associate Professor David Rini recently traveled to South America as an invited speaker at the Center for Inter American Studies in Cuenca, Ecuador. David addressed a mixed crowd of nearly 200 physicians, professional artists, faculty members and medical and art students from local universities and the surrounding area. On March 12, David gave a comprehensive overview of the field of medical illustration with many examples of his illustrations and animations and also the work of fellow artists and students. David talked about the critical role Johns Hopkins University and the Department of Art as Applied to Medicine has had and continues to have on the profession of medical illustration. The talk included lessons learned from his time as a Fulbright Scholar to Chile where he worked to create what he envisioned would be the first program of Medical and Scientific Illustration in South America. David says, “International outreach is so important for our profession, our department, and our institution. When I asked at the beginning of the lecture who in the audience had heard of medical illustration or Johns Hopkins for that matter, I was astonished by how few hands went up. Yet after the lecture more than a dozen people approached me eager to learn more about how to prepare for the field and perhaps apply to our graduate program, and to discuss possibilities for collaboration with our department.”
