Credits: 3 Credits, 5 lecture Hours and 10 Studio hours per week
Copy fitting and editing, typography, image manipulation, design and layout, preparation of mechanicals and photographs, and printing methods applied to biomedical topics reproduced in print media format. Individual projects emphasize solutions appropriate to subject matter and audience.
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Arrange and edit text into headline(s), subheads and body copy.
- Know selected graphic terms and apply them to specific situations.
- Copy fit text and visuals to printed formats.
- Prepare mechanicals demonstrating dropout, second color, and reversal of both type and photo copy.
- Select PMS inks and make paper selections based on industry specifications.
- Prepare thumbnails, rough, and comprehensives for client approval.
- Site visit(s) to identify vendor services and contracts.

Students will further develop their skills through class lectures/demonstrations, and class exercises, including:
- Term Project: Design and prepare a comprehensive layout for 8.5″ x 11″ page format that includes text, image(s), headline(s), and subheads. Choice of subject assigned yearly: choice of client-based material, or professionally oriented personal material.
- Copy fitting paragraph to meet given specs.
- Graphics vocabulary definitions.
- Typography as design: Analyze and identify three typefaces for style
- Photo-type relationships: Combine image and text.
- Prepare mechanicals to meet objectives
- 1:1 faculty-student interface
- Vocabulary exam
- Graded assignments
- Individual conferences and class critiques
- Final grade
